Get a free credit report, but be prepared to spend some money on the scores.
Get A Free Credit Report. Experian, Equifax and Transunion have created an agency to supply you with your annual opportunity to get a free credit report. By law, you are entitled to receive a free credit check from each one of the credit reporting agencies. You can order one at a time or you can space your request out. The choice is yours but you're going to need copies if you embark on credit report repair.
Order Credit Reports all at once.
This is a good option if you want to mark your calender to order again the following year. If you get a free credit report this way you can compare them to see the discrepancies. If there are errors you will have to write a dispute letter, but you are limited to free reports once every 12 months.
Order Credit Reports One every three months.
If you space out the free option and get one report every three to four months from each credit reporting agency, you have the opportunity to track changes as reporting errors are corrected. Keep in mind that you would have to reach the 12 month time line if you order again the following year.
Order On Line
Free credit reports can be ordered on line, by mail or by telephone from the Annual Credit Report Service established by the three major credit reporting agencies. Consumers that are visually impaired can request their report in Braille, large print or in audio format. The number to call is (877) 322-8228. You may be required to certify your disability and after, your reports will be mailed to you.
Security
If you apply for your free reports on line make sure you are at the right site. Many suspicious sites are out there looking for ways to steal information. The site you should be at is www.annualcreditreport.com
No Credit Scores
Your goal should be to increase my credit score and you will have to purchase copies of your existing credit scores if you apply for a free credit report. The cost of each score will be between $8-10 per report. If you see errors and dispute them, the credit reporting agency is required to send you an updated credit report, but they will not automatically send you new scores. You will have to purchase these again.
Many consumers mistakenly believe that the free credit report includes credit scores. It does not. At the present time credit reporting agencies are not required by law to provide free credit scores.
